Bridge Over the River Kwai

Seeing the recent images of flooded Bangkok brought back memories

of my two-month backpacking trip to Thailand in the early 1990s.

Five of us travelled the length and breadth of Thailand, and I loved it.

A few days before our flight home, I saw a notice advertising trips to the

River Kwai. I remembered as a kid hearing my older brother talking

enthusiastically about the movie Bridge on the River Kwai. I wanted to

see this bridge.

We took a bus to Kanchanaburi and hired bicycles. I smiled with

delight as I cycled across the famous bridge, then saw the war graves on

the other side. I put down my bike and walked among the mass of white

crosses, the sun bea ng down and the cicadas shrieking. So many never

made it home.

The bridge over the River Kwai was part of the “Death Railway”.

During World War 2 the Japanese brutally forced about 60,000

Australian, Dutch and British prisoners of war, and about 100,000 local

people, to build the railway from Thailand to Burma. Many thousands

of them died.

I learned about this after finding a small museum next to the river,

apparently a replica of the bamboo huts the POWs had lived in.

I was the only person there.

There was a display of newspaper clippings, photographs and

drawings. One drawing showed men with their legs in the river and fish

around them. They did this so the fish would eat the decaying flesh

from their tropical ulcers.

The Japanese were cruel, forcing the half-starved POWs to work in

dreadful conditions.

One man's name stood out at the museum: an Australian doctor and

POW, Lieutenant-Colonel Ernest “Weary” Dunlop.

When the Japanese captured Java he was taken prisoner and sent

with the thousands of Allied POWs to work on the Thailand-Burma

railway.

Dunlop was in command of the prisoners who were underfed, denied

adequate medicine, mistreated and often tortured. Dysentery, cholera

and diarrhoea were rife.

The Japanese made Dunlop decide every day who was fit for work and

who not. Once when the Japanese guards were about to kill a British

POW who was too sick to work, Dunlop stepped in front of him and said:

“Any bayonet that goes through him will have to go through me first.”

Dunlop and other POW doctors created a hospital in primi ve jungle

huts. They made ar ficial legs from bamboo, sharpened spoons for

scalpels and used a carpenter's saw for amputa ons.

One newspaper article in the museum quotes Dunlop saying he

remembers a particularly bad day: he was sick, but still treating

prisoners, while his orderly crawled along with him, digging maggots

out of the ulcers on his legs.

Many POWs said Dunlop had saved their lives.

I was surprised to find this little museum and to learn about the POWs

and this amazing man. One of the wonderful things about travel is not

so much seeing all the famous places, but coming across something

interesting and deeply moving that you didn't even know about.

I end with fellow POW Donald Stuart's description of Dunlop:

“A lighthouse of sanity in a universe of madness and suffering.”
