Ja well no fine, the voting is over which is kif because we're all a bit

gatvol of the political in-figh ng that can drive a person moggy.

Holding thumbs no bliksems have been elected or we'll start

toyi-toying in protest.

Too much slang? Guess what: all these South African words are now

in the Oxford Dictionary, the accepted authority on the English

language. Still slang, of course, but it gives them a kind of legi macy.

I found this out by accident in a BBC article that began: “Yoh! I'm so

gatvol of this tjoekie I need a zol to handle these moggy people.”

It was a sentence the BBC had made up to show some of the latest

South African additions to the Oxford Dictionary.

I dug a bit further and found others that had recently been added:

bosberaad, broekie, chakalaka and plakkie. There were some that

were new to me, like blesser. Apparently it means the same as

“sugar daddy”.

Then there was isinyonka, that I knew was isiZulu for snakes, but the

Oxford says it has two other meanings: it refers to people who illegally

steal electricity from the municipal grid and are called “snakes”

because they create dangerous electrical wires that snake across the

ground.

The other meaning is akin to “backstabber”, someone who is friendly

to your face but betrays you behind your back. Snakes always get a bad

press, don't they?

I had also never heard of papgeld, a slang term for child support

money usually paid by the father. Apparently had I watched a TV show

Moja Love I would have known about it as it crops up often.

There is even an official “papgeld co-paren ng app”.

I have always loved the Oxford because of its wonderfully precise

defini ons: “Ja well no fine: used to indicate a non-commi al,

resigned or ironic response or reaction; 'alright'; 'that's life';

'whatever you say'; 'whatever'.”

It adds that it's usually pronounced quickly, almost as if it were

a single word, and gives an alternative spelling jawellnofine to show

this.

Then there is skedonk: “an old, dilapidated motor vehicle”, ligh e,

toppie, volkspele and bunny chow.

Wiki says although the origins of bunny chow are disputed, it seems

to date back to early last century. One account says the many

indentured Indians who were brought to KZN to work in the sugar cane

plantations, worked long hours with short breaks. They adapted

and instead of spreading their food out on leaves to eat, which took

me, they carried their food to the plantations in hollowed out half

loaves of bread, which acted as a bowl that could be eaten.

“Yoh” also made it into the Oxford: “a cry or exclama on to express

various emotions or reactions such as surprise, wonder, admiration,

shock or distress”. A word for many occasions.

But who knew that it comes from two languages, Afrikaans and

isiXhosa, or that the Oxford traces it back to 1855?

I rather like Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw's cheeky comment:

“English is a language which has been patched together out of several

languages, and it has never been properly organised."
